Comparison of insulation materials

Thermalin insulation or polystyrene or mineral wool:
which is better and why

Thermal insulation is a thermal insulation material obtained from foamed cement (aerated concrete) and lime - natural raw materials.

This insulation is highly reliable and safe. It has a good thermal conductivity compared to other manufacturers, so it retains heat well and thus helps save on heating in the cold season.

In addition, Thermal insulation has the following advantages:

● high vapor permeability (insulated walls will “breathe”, without creating the negative effect of a “steam room”, which leads to the development of fungus and mold.

● absolute ecological cleanliness,
● non-flammability (the insulation not only does not catch fire, but also prevents the further spread of fire),
● high sound insulation,
● long service life.

This insulation can be used on all types of wall materials, in the construction of structures and buildings for various purposes.

Mineral wool has 🟢 advantages similar to the Thermalin material:

● vapor permeability;
● non-flammability;
● durability.

And the 🔴 disadvantages are:

● is afraid of rodents;
● loss of thermal insulation properties when wet;
● has a high price compared to Thermalin;
● during installation, dust is formed, which is harmful to health due to hydrophobic additives.

Foam plastic, unlike Thermalin insulation, is affordable.

Foam plastic is based on a foamed polymer - a completely synthetic material, which makes heat transfer through this insulation difficult.

🟢 The main advantages of this insulation include:

● It is affordable;
● Light weight (thermal insulation does not complicate facades).

🔴 As for the disadvantages, the main ones include:

● Highly flammable;
● Emits harmful substances, the concentration of which increases with increasing temperature;
● Service life up to 50 years (in practice about 20 years);
● The effect of sunlight on the material.

During the construction of any residential building, the question of choosing the right insulation is particularly acute. The thing is that not only the thermal insulation of the structure, but also its strength and durability largely depend on the selected material.

Features of Thermalin insulation

Pros and cons of polystyrene and mineral wool

So what to choose?

The choice of insulation should be based on an assessment of the wall materials.
It is advisable to carry it out based, first of all, on the vapor permeability of the wall material, as well as taking into account the bearing capacity of the walls, the purpose of the structure and the location of the future structure.

If you use foam concrete, silicate brick, aerated concrete, or concrete, the best choice would be Thermalin insulation. Otherwise, during the operation of the foam, moisture accumulating in the non-vapor-proof insulation will lead to the development of mold.
